The Pencil Thuja (often referred to in commercial nursery trades as the Pencil Pine, Thuja Compacta, or Morpankhi) is a highly popular evergreen conifer belonging to the Cupressaceae (Cypress) family. It is a specific, slender cultivar of Thuja occidentalis (American Arborvitae) celebrated for its tight, columnar, and pencil-thin growth habit.

  • Optimal: Thrives best in full sun to bright, partial shade. It requires a minimum of 6 hours of direct sunlight daily to fuel its dense, compact foliage growth.
  • Insufficient Light: If planted in heavy shade or dim corners, the inner branches will thin out significantly, the growth habit will become sparse and "leggy," and it will lose its signature tailored shape.
  • Ventilation: Ensure it is placed in a well-ventilated area. Good airflow between the dense vertical foliage is crucial to prevent fungal issues.
  • Natural Form: One of its greatest premium features is that it naturally maintains its neat, pencil-thin pyramidal shape without requiring constant shearing.
  • Grooming: In late winter or early spring, use sharp, clean shears to lightly trim any stray outer tips or clear away any dead, dried wood from the base to maintain a polished, immaculate silhouette.
  • Repotting: If grown in containers, upgrade to a larger, heavy planter (such as concrete or heavy terracotta) every 2 years. A heavy pot is essential to prevent the tall, top-heavy column from tipping over during windy days.
