The Sapodilla (Manilkara zapota), universally known in South Asia as Chiku (or Chikoo), is a magnificent tropical evergreen tree belonging to the Sapotaceae family. Native to Central America and the Caribbean, it was introduced to the rest of the tropics, where it has become a prized backyard and commercial treasure.

  • The Requirement: Full, direct, unfiltered sunlight is absolutely mandatory. To fuel the high energy demands of producing its heavy, sugar-rich fruit, the Chiku tree requires a minimum of 6 to 8 hours of direct sun daily.
  • Placement: Keep it in your absolute sunniest spot—an open rooftop terrace, a spacious south-facing balcony, or a wide-open garden lawn. Shaded placements will stall its growth and prevent flowering.
  • Young & Fruiting Plants: Keep the soil evenly, lightly moist. During the spring flowering and summer fruiting stages, consistent watering is essential; sudden drought stress can cause the tiny blossoms or young fruits to drop off early.
  • Grafted vs. Seedling: For home growers and container styling, always choose a grafted Chiku plant. Grafted plants will begin flowering and fruiting within 2 to 3 years, whereas trees grown from seeds can take 5 to 8 years (or longer) to bear fruit.
