The Water Pennywort (Hydrocotyle vulgaris or Hydrocotyle verticillata), also known simply as Pennywort or Dollar Weed, is an enchanting semi-aquatic perennial belonging to the Araliaceae (Ivy) family. Indigenous to wetlands, marshes, and slow-moving water bodies, this plant is celebrated for its whimsical, umbrella-like appearance and its incredible biological versatility.

  • The Sweet Spot: Thrives beautifully in bright, indirect sunlight to soft morning sun. High-light environments keep the stems short, compact, and perfectly sturdy.
  • Adaptability: It can adapt to medium indoor light levels, making it a favorite for bright kitchen countertops, desktop bowls, and terrariums. However, if kept in too much shade, the leaf stems will stretch out drastically ("leggy" growth) and the leaves will become smaller and spaced far apart.
  • The Non-Negotiable Rule: The soil must remain completely, consistently wet at all times. Unlike terrestrial houseplants, Water Pennywort has zero fear of overwatering.
  • Trimming: Because it is a vigorous grower, it can quickly outgrow a tight space. Use sharp, clean shears to snip away any yellowing leaves or to clip back long, running stems. This encourages the plant to branch out and form a much thicker, bushier crown of coins.
  • Grooming: If grown in water, keep an eye out for any algae growth on the container walls. Gently rinse the roots and the vessel under clean running water periodically to maintain a pristine, high-class presentation.
