The Cycas Revoluta (Cycas revoluta), universally known as the Sago Palm or King Sago, is a living fossil of the plant world belonging to the ancient Cycadaceae family. Despite its palm-like appearance and common name, it is not a true palm tree at all; it is a gymnosperm, more closely related to conifers and pine trees, dating back over 200 million years to the Mesozoic era.

  • The Sweet Spot: Thrives best in bright, indirect sunlight to full, direct morning sun. High light levels keep the new leaf fronds short, compact, rigid, and perfectly sturdy.
  • Sun Adaptability: While it loves direct sun, if you are moving a plant that has been kept indoors or in a shade house out into the blazing summer heat, transition it gradually over a week to avoid sunburn.
  • Low Light Warning: It can tolerate medium indoor light, but prolonged placement in a dim room corner will cause its growth to stall completely. When it does try to push out new leaves in low light, they will grow out incredibly long, weak, twisted, and spaced far apart ("etiolated") as they search for light.
  • The Core Philosophy: Because of its thick trunk and slow metabolic rate, overwatering is the fastest way to destroy a Cycad. It hoards water efficiently and has zero tolerance for soggy roots.
  • The Routine: Apply the strict "soak and dry" method. Water the soil deeply and thoroughly until water trickles out of the drainage holes, then allow the entire potting medium to dry out completely before watering again. This typically means watering once every 2 weeks in summer, and reducing it to once every 4 to 6 weeks in peak winter.
