Cuphea is a genus of about 260 species of annual and perennial flowering plants native to warm temperate and tropical regions of the Americas. Renowned for their exceptional heat tolerance, virtually non-stop blooming cycles, and ability to attract pollinators like hummingbirds and butterflies, they are staples for borders, containers, and mass ground covers.
Depending on your local climate, they thrive as evergreen perennials in tropical zones or as vigorous annuals in colder regions.

  • Cuphea plants are largely "self-cleaning," meaning they drop spent blooms naturally without requiring deadheading. However, they benefit from occasional structural pruning:
  • Mid-Summer Shape: If the plant begins to look leggy or sparse in mid-summer, shear back the outer 1–2 inches of growth to stimulate fresh, bushy branching and an immediate flush of new flowers.
  • Spring Cleanup: For perennial regions, cut the woody stems back by half in late winter or early spring to clear out old growth and shape the shrub for the coming season.
  • Pest & Disease Note: Cuphea is exceptionally pest-resistant. Keep an eye out for occasional aphids or whiteflies on fresh spring growth, which can be easily managed with a sharp spray of water or insecticidal soap. Ensure good air circulation around the dense foliage to prevent fungal powdery mildew.
