Bougainvillea is a genus of thorny, woody ornamental vines, bushes, and trees native to tropical South America. Celebrated globally for its jaw-dropping, explosive displays of color, it is one of the most resilient, heat-loving, and drought-tolerant plants available for landscaping.

  • If your Bougainvillea isn't blooming, it is almost always due to a lack of light. It needs scorching, direct sunlight to trigger its spectacular color show. When planted in partial shade, the plant shifts all its energy into growing long, thorny, green vegetative stems rather than flower bracts.
  • The Routine: Water deeply, allowing the water to soak right down to the root ball, then wait. Do not water again until the soil has thoroughly dried out and the leaves just begin to slightly droop.
  • Triggering Blooms: Professional growers often purposefully withhold water until the plant shows mild wilt stress. This minor environmental stress tricks the Bougainvillea into a survival mechanism, causing it to push out a massive blanket of colorful bracts.
  • Post-Bloom Trim: Once a cycle of color fades, trim the stems back by a few inches. This forces the stem to branch out, creating multiple new tips that will host the next round of colorful bracts.
  • Safety First: Always wear heavy-duty gardening gloves to protect your hands from the sharp, hidden thorns along the woody canes.
