Canna Lilies (genus Canna) are vibrant, large-leafed tropical and subtropical perennial herbs. Despite their common name, they are not true lilies at all; instead, they are closely related to ginger, bananas, and arrowroot.
Prized for their dramatic, oversized foliage and showy, asymmetric blooms, Canna Lilies add an instant architectural and tropical flair to summer garden beds, borders, and water features.

  • Cannas are true sun-worshipers. To achieve peak height and non-stop blooming, plant them in a spot where they get baked by the sun all day long. If they receive too much shade, their tall stalks will become weak, lean toward the light, and fail to produce flower spikes.
  • Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist. During the heat of summer, you may need to water them multiple times a week. Cannas are so moisture-tolerant that dwarf varieties are frequently used as marginal plants in backyard ponds.
  • Feeding: Mix a generous amount of compost into the soil at planting time. Once the growing season gets underway, top-dress with organic fertilizer or feed monthly with a well-balanced liquid food to sustain their rapid growth.
  • Deadhead Spent Flower Spikes: Once an individual flower spike finishes blooming, cut it back to the next node down. A secondary flower spike will often emerge right below the cut.
  • Remove tattered leaves: Wind can easily tear the large, paddle-like leaves. Cleanly snip off any shredded or browned outer leaves at the base to keep the plant looking manicured.
