Variegated Canna Lilies take the dramatic, tropical punch of standard Cannas and elevate it with spectacular, multi-toned striped foliage. For many gardeners, the flowers are almost a secondary bonus; the intricately patterned leaves provide a massive architectural presence in garden borders, patio containers, and landscape backdrops from late spring all the way until autumn.

The white or light-yellow patches on the leaves lack chlorophyll, making them highly sensitive to intense, burning midday heat.
For the most pristine foliage, plant them where they receive direct, morning sunlight but get filtered or dappled shade during the harshest hours of the afternoon. Too much deep shade, however, will cause the vibrant variegation to fade back to a dull, solid green.
Watering: They thrive in consistently wet soil and can even be grown in heavy pots submerged directly into shallow garden ponds. If container-grown on a patio, place a deep saucer underneath the pot and keep it constantly filled with water during the peak of summer.
Wind Protection: The large, broad leaves can easily catch the wind and shred into tatters. Plant them in a location sheltered from strong, sweeping gusts (such as near a wall, fence, or behind a structural hedge).
Trimming: Promptly cut away any wind-torn or sunburned outer leaves at the very base of the stem using sharp, clean shears to encourage the rhizome to push out fresh, unblemished growth.
